Khodrocar - BMW will rival Mercedes in the compact coupe saloon class with the arrival of the 2 Series Gran Coupe in 2019, and our spy photographers have caught sight of the impending all-new entry into BMW’s line-up undergoing cold weather testing in the snow.
With a fresh CLA spied recently too, competition is hotting up in the segment. Mercedes plans to fight the compact saloon market on two fronts, with a conventional saloon take on the new A-Class, which will be revealed later this week.
These latest shots follow on from a flurry of photos taken in Germany. The camouflaged BMW reveals noticeable changes between this model and the existing 1 and 2 Series ranges. The most prominent difference is the addition of two doors, making the car in question a four-door coupe, a model which is not offered in today's range.
As the Gran Coupe will launch in conjunction with the next generation 2 Series, it will adopt a new exterior design over today's model - most of which is hidden under the heavy disguise. The upcoming coupe and Gran Coupe will also switch to a new front-wheel drive platform, shared with X1 SUV.
The Gran Coupe name has already appeared in the BMW 4 Series range. In 2019 we can also expect to see an 8 Series Gran Coupe, which will serve as a more svelte and spacious alternative to the 8 Series coupe. Gran Coupe models also carry a price premium over the two-door models they are based on.
In May 2017, BMW released the limited edition M240i with a production run of just 750 units, indicating that the lifecycle of the current 2 Series is coming to a close.
